Screenplay Adaptation based on Oscar Wilde's "The Canterville Ghost"Excerpt
INT. UPSTAIRS HALL -- NIGHT (LORD DEVON strides down the hall like a swashbuckler. BILLET shuffles behind him, not quite keeping up. A bedroom door opens and ALEX, dressed in a nightgown, walks out. She stops suddenly when she sees Lord Devon and Billet. Lord Devon pulls a sword out of his scabbard and swishes it through the air in front of her. Alex doesn't move. Lord Devon turns to Billet).
LORD DEVON
Look how she stands...
(Lord Devon turns, passing the sword through Billet's body. Alex gasps).
ALEX
Oh! Are you hurt?
(She rushes to Billet's side).
Is there anything I can do to help?
(She searches for a wound. There is none.)
You're not hurt!
BILLET
What can he do to me?
I'm already dead. However...
it is nice of you to inquire.
(Alex looks from Billet to Lord Devon, then down to the sword. She reaches for the tip of the sword, but Billet jumps in front of her. She steps back).
BILLET (con't)
It can't hurt me. But it can hurt you.
(To Lord Devon)
Put that thing away!
LORD DEVON
Swine!
(Lord Devon spins about and evaporates into a green vapor. The sword CLATTERS to the ground).
